Cubic Boron Nitride cubic boron nitride, abbreviated as: CBN or cBN. CBN was found in nature in 2009 by an international research team of geologists from the United States, China and Germany, and was named qingsongite. Previously, the mineral could only be synthesized in the laboratory. In 2009, scientists from the University of California, Riverside, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and colleagues from Chinese and German scientific research institutions, together with their counterparts from Chinese and German scientific research institutions, discovered the chromium-rich ancient oceanic crust at a depth of about 306 kilometers underground in the southern mountainous area of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in China. The mineral was found in the rock, which formed crystals at high temperatures of about 1,300 degrees Celsius and high pressures of 118,430 atmospheres.
